Abstract

This article explores the possible statistical relationships between discharge status (alive or deceased) and sociodemographic, clinical, and care characteristics of patients with interfered needs who were diagnosed with and treated for COVID-19 in an intensive care unit in Colombia. The study was observational, descriptive, relational, cross-sectional, and retrospective. The chi-square test was used. The results indicate that 467 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 were treated during the observation period (2020-2021), of those, 54.6% were discharged alive, with a greater predominance of men (59.5%). The average age was 59.8 years (SD: 17.5); 66.1% were overweight or obese; 76.7% had no comorbidities and had not self-medicated prior to hospitalization. Furthermore, at the time of admission, 82.9% of patients had been experiencing symptoms for less than ten days; 80.9% commonly presented with dyspnea; 58.5% with cough; and 66.8% with oxygen saturation below 90%. Of the patients with altered respiratory needs, 63% required mechanical ventilation. Pronation was unnecessary in 72.6% of cases, and 86.9% of patients were admitted with organ failure (SOFA score >3). Deceased patients were over 60 years of age, required mechanical ventilation, and had an arterial line (p < 0.05). By contrast, surviving patients were under 60 years of age and had normal creatinine and cardiac troponin values. According to the CURB-65 index, they had no comorbidities or pneumonia. They required invasive measures, such as central venous catheters, and did not need renal support therapies (p < 0.05).
