Abstract

DOI:  https://doi.org/10.31948/rev.criterios/26.1-art5

Iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) is a type of anemia caused by diminished iron stores. Iron is important for oxygen transport and erythropoiesis. The lack of this element may be due to malabsorption, a poor diet or continuous blood loss. This article started as a classroom activity in which a hypothetical clinical scenario about iron deficiency anemia in a premenopausal woman was simulated and discussed. Hence, the present disorder is thoroughly described. Its clinical manifestations will also be commented. Additionally, an updated review is included. The main objective of this publication is to provide healthcare professionals with a comprehensive description of the disease and with hints to identify patients with a high risk of IDA.
