The informal caregiver of the elderly in Pasto city

The aim of the research was to identify the characteristics of the informal caregiver of older adults according to the level of dependence in basic
activities of daily living, in order to provide management guidelines for occupational therapy. The investigation was mixed, with a convenience
sampling of 25 seniors and 24 informal caregivers. Katz index was used to assess dependency of the elderly and Zarit scale for assessing informal
caregiver overload. The most important results are: average age of adults over 76 years; greater proportion were women (72 %) with severe
dependence for bath (48 %); 52 % moderate dependence for food; average age of informal caregivers 50 years, predominantly women with 96 %; 52 % have low income; 32 % is concerned negatively about their family relationships;
64 % creates a dependency of the elderly towards the caregiver and 68 % of caregivers are considered solely responsible for the elderly. In conclusion
strategies for occupational therapy should be directed to the organization of time, according to the coverage needs for the implementation of the
basic activities of daily living of the elderly, and improving the habits and routines of both the caregiver as the elderly.
